Is Modernity Old Fashioned?

Fr Tim has an interesting post Modernity is Old Fashioned here. It is something I think about when examining my parenting style. It is interesting that it was those priests & lay people who grew up in the Traditional Church that abandoned much of tradition. I think here of priests such as Henri Nouwen who I like very much. Young people often but not always wish to do things differently from their parents - so you might get children of liberal parents wishing to be more traditional. I wonder what the next generation of children brought up in a traditional environment will do when they grow up & have their own families. Will they stay traditional or rebel much like their grandparents?

My personal approach is that young people should have access to the Latin Liturgy & both forms of the Mass. They should also have the choice & opportunity to hear & learn hymns such as Praise to the Holiest, Soul of My Saviour, the beautiful hymns to Our Lady &  the Sacred Heart as well if they wish more modern hymns & Christian music. They should be provided with opportunities for processions & devotions & good catechesis for the Sacraments. They should avoid obsessing over one type of Mass or criticising (mea culpa) & should be active & joyful Christians serving their communities.

Catholics in my view should be modern, forward thinking, traditional but not traditional "ist", Roman (in our case), evangelical, orthodox, charismatic, & humble. ( not that I even pretend to live up to any of that!).

Unfortunately, Fr Kramer (FSSP on Fr Finigan's clip) is of my parents generation & just doesn't work for me!
I think a "balanced" approach is best which is kind of funny really me being or was unbalanced!

Do traditionalists use the discipline?

Just wondering..if you are more likely to use one if you go to the EF rather than OF Mass or can everyone use them? I'm sure Richard Collins would know..here Does Fr Z sell them on his blog?

Reading some blogs makes me want to self-flagellate!

The Interview with Jackie Pullinger

Thanks to Ora Pro Nobis for sending me this link.

When I was 16 at my careers interview I told them I wanted to be a missionary. However when I was 17 I met my husband Andrew & that was that!

I'm going to spend the day speaking in tongues!

Am re-reading Chasing the Dragon by Jackie Pullinger - wonderful...

" Mincing "

Walk with an affected fastidiousness, typically with short quick steps.

" Cranks "

"An eccentric person, esp. one obsessed by a particular subject or theory."

That's what my dad called them....

Back to the book I'm writing!

The family don't like me spending much time on the computer but have bought me a new laptop all the same to write my book! I'm thinking of calling it " Passing on the Pain "..lol I notice Damian Thompson has his new book out on addiction " The Fix ". I'm not sure if he talks about religious addiction; same sex addiction etc though he does mention my cup-cake addiction!

It's a staggering thought for parents to examine just how influential for good or bad they are for their own children. It's also a common thing that children often want to be "different" to their parents but often end up repeating generational weaknesses. For example becoming alcoholic themselves after growing up in an alcoholic home. Claudia Black has the famous book " It will never happen to me. "

John Bradshaw is world renowned for his writings on the family & family secrets..ie what you don't know can hurt you. Children are extremely resilient though some more than others. Some children are much more sensitive. The presence of the father & his religious faith is extremely important. Children apparently keep the faith more often when dad practices. I think that is so true as all our children practice their faith - the quiet example of their dad who kneels & goes to Mass & the workings of grace.

I've been reading Henri Nouwen again - his last book written on sabbatical from the L'Arche community. a troubled, sensitive priest who offers much to the wounded personality. Well..just some random thoughts that I need to write about!

PS I just remembered The Story of a Family about St Therese of Lisieux's family. Wasn't it Leonie who had problems with the maid having some kind of hold over her? It must be true that all families are dysfunctional in some way - what's normal?

Same sex attraction as an attachment disorder..

Makes a lot of sense to me..am reading about this...

Five patron saints and 13 intercessors named for World Youth Day 2013 in Rio

The next World Youth Day will take place in Rio in 2013. Now, organizers have announced the five patron saints for the big event. The first is Our Lady of Aparecida, which is also the patroness of Brazil. A basilica is named after her and every year roughly 10 million pilgrims visit the site. Back in 2007 Benedict XVI made a visit, during his first trip to Latin America.

I'm so pleased about this - my 10th child was born on the Feast of Our Lady of Aparecida...Lovely to see St Rose of Lima - saint chosen by Jacinta for her recent Confirmation..more at link on Jean Heimann's blog below:

Parkes family travels..

Andrew has taken half of the children to Germany. Jenny & Dan have gone also. They are staying with Dan's mom & dad..Linda & Rev Andy who is Anglican Chaplain to the forces in Paderborn. They will also visit Andrew's aunt Magda & his cousins in Zeuthen. Rosie, Alexander, Andrew & Jacinta are VERY excited! It was wonderful to all pray as a family spontaneously just before departure at 6 a.m!

On Saturday Mary & Patricia travel to Lourdes where they will be handmaidens. They are part of the Birmingham Diocesan Pilgrimage led by Archbishop Bernard Longley. There was a special Mass of blessing on Sunday at St Chad's Cathedral - full of enthusiastic young people! Wonderful...

Did someone say the SSPX could marry?

Sorry I know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit! It was the Anglicans I was thinking of..err..
